Bacolod - Football may be replacing basketball as the most-loved sport in the Philippines as thousands pack the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City for the Philippine Azkals-Mongolian Blue Wolves match Wednesday evening.
Fans filled the entire stadium hours before the match started, some as early as 3:00 pm local time, clad in white T-shirts with the words "I love Azkals" written on them. According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the stadium — which has a seating capacity of 18,000 — was packed well above capacity. Dyan Castillejo, a sports correspondent for ABS-CBN News, describes the scene: "Punong-puno nag stadium (The stadium is filled)," she said. "Sea of white people in the stadium. Everybody is so excited. Sa labas ng stadium, maraming tao rin (There are lots of people outside the stadium, too).
Everybody is just all smiles. 'Yung nakikita natin sa Europa na 'di natin usually nakikita sa Philippines is getting into a sport that is actually the most popular in the world (What we see in Europe that we don't usually see in the Philippines is getting into a sport that is actually the most popular in the world."
Live coverage of the game was provided by Studio 23 when it began around 6:00 pm local time. 42:34 minutes into the first half, Emilio Caligdong scored the first goal, giving the Philippine Azkals a 1-0 lead over the Mongolia's Blue Wolves.
Caligdong tricked a defender near the Mongolian goal before kicking the ball right in between the legs of the Blue Wolves' goalie. During the second half, the Azkals exhibited an overwhelming defense, making it extremely difficult for the Blue Wolves to gain possession of the ball. Phil Younghusband sealed the win for the Azkals with another goal, ending the game 2-0 at past nine in the evening.
