MANILA, Philippines – Studio 23, the home channel of the UAAP and the NCAA, is now also the carrying station of the Philippine Basketball Association.

The PBA announced today it has approved the proposal of Solar Sports to transfer the broadcast and coverage of the PBA games from RPN-9 to Studio 23.

The PBA games will be seen on ABS-CBN’s UHF channel at least for the rest of the season – the remaining part of the three-year contract between the PBA and Solar Sports.

Solar Sports has informed the PBA it’s no longer renewing its ties with the pro league at the end of the season.
The PBA said it approved Solar’s proposal after evaluating the technical facilities and capability of Studio 23 vis-à-vis RPN 9.

“The members of the board have consulted with their respective principals regarding the said transfer,” said board chairman Rene Pardo.

“Given the time constraints and lack of available and acceptable VHF channels at this time, the board allowed the transfer of the coverage to Studio 23 for the rest of the season,” Pardo added
“The board’s decision ensures that our fans will continue to enjoy our PBA games for the 36th season,” said commissioner Chito Salud. “It has always been the primary consideration of the board that our games are brought to a wider and younger audience.”

Yesterday, the board deferred a decision on the TV coverage issue, pending a study on the legal repercussions of the matter.

Salud should have done his assignment, finding no possible loopholes or problems that may arise on the transfer.
RPN-9’s move to reformat its programming prompted Solar Sports to request the PBA of the broadcast transfer.
“With due respect to Solar Sports, they informed us of their plan as early as last year,” said Salud.
