MANILA, Philippines—Team Pacquiao’s training camp opened Monday, with pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao hitting the road and doing some gym work in Baguio City.
The Sarangani congressman, who is staking his World Boxing Organization welterweight crown against Shane Mosley on May 7 in Las Vegas, jogged at the Burnham Park early in the morning and then worked the mitts for seven rounds with chief trainer Freddie Roach at the Cooyesan Hotel gym in the afternoon.
According to Filipino trainer Nonoy Neri, the first working day was a breeze for Pacquiao as the eight-division world champion had already done light training and physical conditioning in General Santos City.
Pacquiao also sweated it out at the People’s Champ Gym on March 6.
“He (Manny) weighs between 151 and 152 pounds, which is his normal weight,” said Neri, who drove to Baguio with Buboy Fernandez ahead of Pacquiao’s three-vehicle convoy Sunday night.
“He’ll be in fine shape when training goes full blast next week,” Neri added.
Conditioning expert Alex Ariza is also in Baguio, where Pacquiao will train for four weeks until April 2, when he flies to Roach’s Wild Card Gym in Hollywood for the second half of his preparation.
Pacquiao’s first two sparring partners—super welterweight Shawn Porter and super lightweight David Rodela—are expected to arrive in Manila from the United States late next week.
