“Raging Bull” not hanging around after Perez victory
New IBO bantamweight champion Vic Darchinyan (36-3-1, 27 KO’s) has set his sights on unified champion Nonito Donaire or a rematch with former opponent Abner Mares later this summer after seeing off Yonnhy Perez in five rounds last Saturday night in California.
The Australia-based Armenian, who is now a three-weight world champion, is planning a move up to the super-bantamweight limit in the near future and may move up sooner, rather than later if a bout with either fighter cannot be made in the next few months.
Darchinyan, 35, lost a close split decision to Mexican Mares in December in the semi-final of the Showtime’s bantamweight tournament. He will be hoping to entice the 25 year-old to a rematch, if scheduled opponent Joseph Agbeko is unable to fight after suffering a pinched nerve, meaning their meeting last week was cancelled.
A bout with Donaire is possible, but the Filipino has had contractual problems with his promoters Top Rank. His May 28th date against WBA champion Anselmo Moreno was recently scrapped, leaving him without a date or opponent for his first defence of his titles.
