University of St. La Salle survived Southwestern University’s onslaught to win the battle of the Visayan squads, 25-15, 25-14, 22-25, 12-25, 15-9, in the Shakey’s V-League quarterfinal round on Tuesday at The Arena in San Juan.

The win shoved USLS within a win of securing a first ever semifinals berth in the league. The team can advance to the next round with a victory over Far Eastern University in its next match.

League leading scorer Patty Orendain posted a personal best 27 points, including 22 hits, four blocks and an ace in powering the Lady Stingers in beating the Lady Cobras.

Parang ninerbiyos kasi sila after na makita yung kaibigan nila na na-injured. Ayun parang nanigas at hindi na makakilos," explained St. La Salle coach Roger Banzuela, referring to SWU’S guest player Erika Verano, who suffered a sprained left ankle after a bad fall after the match point in the second set.

With Verano being sidelined, the rest of the Lady Stingers were visibly affected.

The team lost the next two sets, but Banzuela got big games from setter April Hingpit and American guest player Jayde Hair, who stepped up in their net defense.

The Lady Stingers posted 16 blocks as against only three by the Lady Cobras. - RCJ, GMA News
