Bustamante, Orcollo, Alcano enter 9-Ball Final 32

DEFENDING CHAMPION Francisco “Django” Bustamante, Dennis “Robocop” Orcollo and Ronato “Volcano” Alcano, along with seven other Filipino cue masterd, advanced to the Final 32 of the 2011 World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) World 9-Ball Championship after hurdling separate foes at the Al Sadd Sports Club in Doha, Qatar, Wednesday night.

Bustamante, playing under the banner of sportsman/businessman Aristeo “Putch” Puyat, carved an 11-3 win over Sascha-Andrej Tege of Germany in their Last 64, knockout stage encounter.


Orcollo, the pride of Perry Mariano’s Bugsy Promotions, edged Muhammad Zulfikri of India, 11-9, while Alcano, a former WPA World 9-ball and 8-ball champion, defeated Chris Orme of Canada, 11-7.


The victories allowed Bustamante, Orcollo and Alcano to join fellow Filipinos Lee Van Corteza, Carlo Biado, Alan Cuartero, Antonio Lining, Antonio Gabica, Vicenancio Tanio and giant killer Caneda Villamor in the Final 32. All of them are after the $36,000 top prize in this $250,000 total pot prize week-long WPA-sanctioned tournament.


Corteza, the pride of Jonathan Sy’s Negros Billiards Stable (NBS) and JSY Sports, subdued countryman Oliver Medenilla, 11-5; Biado, also from Bugsy Promotions, dealt Takhti Zarekani of Iran an 11-6 defeat while Cuartero hammered Ahmad Taufiq Murni of Brunei, 11-19.


Lining also from NBS and JSY Sports, outplayed Oliver Ortmann of Germany, 11-5, Gabica nipped Mika Immonen of Finland, 11-10, Tanio upset Nick van den Berg of the Netherlands, 11-7, and Villamor ousted another ex-WPA World 9-ball and 8-ball champion Efren “Bata” Reyes, 11-5.


Joven Alba, Israel Rota, Jeffrey de Luna, Roberto Gomez and Raymund Faraon failed to advance in the next phase after losing their Last 64 matches.


Alba bowed to Chang Jun-lin of Chinese-Taipei, 5-11, Rota yielded to Chang Yu-lun of Chinese-Taipei, 9-11, De Luna lost to Fu Che wei of Chinese-Taipei, 9-11, Gomez was beaten by Daryl Peach of Great Britain, 4-11, and Faraon versus Stephan Cohen of France, 9-11.


Two more Filipino cue artists are expected to be ousted in this annual event with Orcollo facing Villamor and Corteza going up against Biado in the round of 32. -- Marlon Bernardino
