MANILA, Philippines — Joaqui Trillo, Alaska’s representative to the PBA Board and speaking on behalf of team owner Fredie Uytengsu Jr., said an increase in the salary cap both for teams and individual players will avoid speculations that players are receiving more than their respective salaries from their mother ball clubs.
“If they want to raise the salary cap, it’s more favorable. With that, teams can give players more but (stay) within the cap,” Trillo said in a phone interview Tuesday. “If we want to give an increase (to players), we should put it on record.”
Trillo was reacting to PBA Commissioner Chito Salud’s warning the other day that he will not hesitate taking legal action against teams if they are found to be violating the salary cap rules.
Under the present setup, teams have a cap of P36 million per season, and players a maximum of P350,000 per season.
“Should I find actionable cases of salary cap breach, I will not waste time sanctioning the guilty parties,” Salud said.
Earlier, Uytengsu had spoken that some teams are going over the cap although the Alaska team owner did not specify which teams.
He was warned by Salud to be more careful with his allegations.
Trillo, however, defended his boss, saying that as team owner, he can say what he wants.
When Salud said issues like these should be best discussed within the confines of the PBA board, Trillo agreed but made some exceptions.
“That’s true, that’s how we operate in the PBA board. We discuss sensitive issues during board meetings,” said Trillo. “But sometimes, it comes to the point that a person has to voice it out, and I think Mr. Uytengsu can say whatever he wants.”
League records show that 15 players are receiving the maximum salary of P350,000. Interestingly, Alaska has the most numbers of players enjoying the max with four – guard LA Tenorio, center Sonny Thoss, and forwards Tony dela Cruz and JR Reyes.
The other 11 players receiving P350,000 a month are James Yap, Kerby Raymundo and Joe Devance of B-Meg, Kelly Williams and Ranidel de Ocampo of Talk ’N Text, Asi Taulava and Reynel Hugnatan of Meralco, Barangay Ginebra’s Mark Caguioa, Danny Seigle of Barako Bull, Gary David of Powerade, and the latest to join the ‘‘club,’’ Rain or Shine’s Gabe Norwood, who recently signed a new two-year deal.
Two teams don’t have anyone receiving the maximum salary. These are Shopinas and, surprisingly, recently-crowned Governors’ Cup champion Petron Blaze whose top players are Arwind Santos, Jay Washington and Alex Cabagnot.
Trillo said that while Alaska has the most number of players with maximum salary, they have stayed within the cap using “creative” means.
Although there is a maxiumum monthly salary, PBA rules allow teams to award bonuses when teams reach a certain level of achievement.
For instance, players with maximum salaries are allowed to receive one-fourth of their salary or P87,500 when they reach the quarterfinals, and then another one-fourth for entering the semifinals or P175,000. Making it to the finals entitles a player one month bonus of P350,000, and team that wins a title give players one and half month bonus or P525,000.
For players not receiving the max, they also get bonuses corresponding to their salaries.
