MANILA, Philippines – A boxing analyst believes that no matter what happens in the September 17 boxing match between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Victor Ortiz, Manny Pacquiao's status as the number 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world is safe.

Doug Fischer of RingTV.com said that Pacquiao will remain the number 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world, even if Mayweather ends up victorious.

"My hunch is that the Filipino icon’s status as the No. 1 welterweight and the sport’s No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter is safe until his own showdown with Juan Manuel Marquez," Fischer said.

If Mayweather defeats Ortiz, then the American boxer will likely make his return to the pound-for-pound rankings.
"If Mayweather handles Ortiz and wins by decision or late TKO, I think he’ll probably be installed at No. 2 in the P4P and No. 2 at welterweight, right behind his rival," Fischer said.

Mayweather was dropped from The Ring's rankings after more than a year of inactivity. His bout against Ortiz will be his first in 16 months.

Fischer believes that as long as Pacquiao does not lose to Marquez, his status as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world is safe.

"Mayweather can get back in the No. 2 spot (in the pound-for-pound rankings), but he'll have to look really good against Ortiz to displace Sergio Martinez and Nonito Donaire, in my opinion," Fischer added.

Martinez and Donaire are 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in the pound-for-pound rankings.

Fischer gives Mayweather a chance at overtaking Pacquiao in the welterweight rankings should Pacquiao fail to dominate or impress against Marquez.

"I know this, though," Fischer adds. "Ortiz will earn a spot in the P4P top 10 if he can take out Floyd."
Ortiz is currently ranked 2nd in The Ring’s welterweight rankings.
