Boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao admitted being a bit disappointed with former world champion Shane Mosley, who engaged him in an evasive fight during their 12-round battle in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday (Sunday in Manila).

Although he was happy to retain his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight crown, Pacquiao said he is not fully satisfied with the way he kept it.

“It's good but not really 100% satisfied,” the fighter of the decade said in an interview with ESPN.

Pacquiao said he was expecting Mosley to engage him into a toe-to-toe fight.

“He's moving around, he didn't want to fight with me. I thought he's coming inside and fight with me,” the Filipino said.

Mosley refused to engage Pacquiao aggressively, especially after he was decked by the Filipino champion in Round 3.

“That's why we saw less action in the ring,” said the Filipino champion.

Leg cramp

Mosley's running around the ring and Pacquiao's seemingly tepid attacks earned boos in the end of the 8th and 9th rounds as the crowd of 16,000 at the MGM Grand Arena tried to spur the 2 fighters to engage.

Unknown to many, Pacquiao was suffering from a leg cramp as early as the 4th round and could not press his advantage.

"I asked them to press my leg because it really hurts. In the last 3 rounds, it felt better," he said in a separate interview.

On Mosley’s ‘knockdown’

Pacquiao also admitted being infuriated after Mosley scored a questionable “knockdown” in the 10th round.

Pacquiao was caught off balance when Mosley threw short punches after a clinch. The American boxer gave him a shove to send the Filipino down the canvass.

Referee Kenny Bayless ruled it as a knockdown in favor of Mosley. He gave Pacquiao a mandatory count despite the Filipino champion’s protest.

“Even if you didn't get hit that's still a knockdown. It's already recorded in the scorecards,” said Pacquiao. “That's why I got mad. I had to recover on points.”

According to Yahoo! Sports, Bayless later apologized to Pacquiao over the mistake.

When asked who he prefers to fight next, Pacquiao, who also serves as the congressman for the lone district of Sarangani province, said he’d rather leave the decision to his promoter.

“I want to go back home in the office,” he said.

His boxing promoter, Bob Arum, said he is looking for a November fight date between Pacquiao and Mexican champion Juan Manuel Marquez.

Arum said he will let the Filipino champion take a breather first before discussing his next bout.

Fans disappointed over 'bromance'

Some of Pacquiao's fans shared his view on the Mosley fight.

Most of Pacquiao's fans who paid P500 to watch the bout at the UP Diliman Theater were left disappointed.

Some called the match "boring," citing that they were expecting an action-packed match.

Some complained that the 12 rounds were more of a "bromance" than a boxing match, saying both Mosley and Pacquiao lacked the aggression they were expecting.

Some fans, however, said that they were satisfied with the match.

Each time Pacquiao connected with a punch, the crowd cheered wildly at the theater.

At least 1,800 fans attended the UP screening. Although a number of patrons complained, one was rushed to the hospital after experiencing chest pains while cheering for Pacquiao.

Boxing fan loses Hermes bag in a bet over Pacquiao match - inquirer

MANILA, Philippines -- A 60-year-old grandmother who was brought by her son to a live streaming of the Manny Pacquaio-Shane Mosley boxing fight at the Araneta coliseum on Mother’s Day, lost a Hermes bag in a bet, but was happy about it.

"I lost the bet and a bag like Dionisia’s, but I’m happy to be able to buy something for my son’s car as I promised him when Manny wins,’’ Emma Granada told the Philippine Daily Inquirer as she and her family emerged from the Big Dome on Sunday afternoon.

A Hermès bag costs $9,000 to $150,000 and has become a symbol of wealth and luxury for many women.

Granada said that she and her son Jimmy had a "friendly’’ bet before they arrived at the Big Dome on Sunday morning from Nueva Ecija where they live.

"I had to bet for Mosley, and Jimmy for Manny just to enhance the fun on this day,’’ the mother said.
She added that it’s her first time to watch a boxing match outside of her home.

Jimmy who was present during the interview said he came here in the county for a vacation with his family, and chose the Pacquio-Mosley match as a gift to his mother, a boxing fan.

"It’s perfect timing because it’s mother’s day, and my mother likes boxing,’’ he said.

Emma, who claimed she has been a boxing fan since the time of Mohammad Ali, described the just concluded event as not so great and called on Bob Arum, the fight’s promoter, to get more competitive challengers for Pacquiao.

"It was ok lang, but Arum should not allow Manny to fight boxers like Mosley, because it diminished his fighting power stature,’’ she added.

The mother who said, she considers herself ``a sort of an analyst,’’ after watching so many boxing bouts, said it was her first time to watch a boxer who almost cheated.

"Mosley’s style of fighting dirty is deplorable,’’ she said, referring to the moment when Mosley shoved Manny in a bid to knock him down.

"He was obviously desperate to win and can’t help but get nasty and push Manny to bring him down,’’ she said.

Pacquiao vs Mosley round by round with pictures

ROUND 1: This fight is underway. Both fighters start cautiously and carefully, wanting to feel each other out before taking any chances. Mosley lands a good jab but Pacquiao answers with a hard counter and the crowd roars. Mosley connects with a hard right hand to the body. Pacquiao wants to close the distance but Mosley is doing a nice job controlling where the fight goes, and Mosley throws a hard right. Close first round.

ROUND 2: Pacquiao lunges with a left to the body and Mosley avoids it and counters with a right. Pacquiao seems to be having a little trouble with Mosley's movement. Pacquiao unleashes a hard combination. Mosley with a good 1-2 to back Pacquiao up. Now Pacquiao answers with a combination. There was an accidental clash of heads and the ref warned both fighters to watch it. Pacquiao starting to move a little faster and get Mosley off balance. The crowd chants "Manny! Manny!" Good combination to end the round. Pacquiao Round..

ROUND 3: Mosley connects with a right hand but Pacquiao keeps moving forward. Mosley ducks under a punch and throws to Pacquiao's body, then Pacquiao swings wildly with a hard left. Pacquiao charges straight forward and DOWN GOES MOSLEY! Pacquiao smells blood and is on the attack. Pacquiao is now swarming and Mosley just has to back away, clinch and try to survive the round. Pacquiao with a big left hand! Great round for Pacquiao, 10-8.

ROUND 4: Pacquiao comes right back out and goes straight ahead at Mosley again. Mosley falls down but it's a trip, not a knockdown. Mosley lands a hard right hand! Mosley's best punch of the night slows Pacquiao down. Pacquiao is OK but Mosley is showing he still has plenty of fight left in him. Now Pacquiao on the attack again. Mosley takes advantage of his superior reach, moves out of the way and lands a punch of his own. Mosley with a good combination, Pacquiao counters. A very close fourth round

ROUND 5: Pacquiao lands a good hook with his right hand. Pacquiao now lands a good straight left. Pacquiao with a great 1-2 and Mosley can do nothing but back away. Mosley connects with a left hook, but this has been a good round for Pacquiao.

ROUND 6: Hard exchange of punches in the center of the ring early in the sixth round. Pacquiao connects with an uppercut and Mosley is starting to look like he's getting worn down by Pacquiao's volume of punches. Mosley is slowing things down and clinching with Pacquiao, causing the fans to boo. Then Pacquiao separates from Mosley and goes on the attack, causing the fans to cheer. Mosley lands a good right hand but the round goes to Pacquiao.

ROUND 7: Mosley gets through with a jab but Pacquiao is throwing far more punches and the difference in this fight is that Pacquiao is throwing three punches for every one from Mosley. We're starting to see some swelling around Mosley's right cheekbone, caused by Pacquiao's left hand. Pacquiao with a 1-2 and a good left hand. Now a great three-punch combination from Pacquiao, who is taking control of this fight.

ROUND 8: The fans are starting to boo as the pace is slowing down a bit. Pacquiao now throws a hard combination that backs Mosley up, and Mosley just isn't even fighting -- he's just avoiding Pacquiao without unleashing any offense of his own. Pacquiao is not quite as ferocious a fighter tonight as we've grown accustomed to seeing over the last few years, but Mosley is simply playing defense. Another round for Pacquiao,

ROUND 9: At this point Mosley seems like he's growing increasingly hesitant to attack, and Pacquiao looks like he's going to cruise to victory. Mosley lands a 1-2 but Pacquiao is really the one controlling the pace of the fight. Pacquiao comes forward with a burst of punches, with solid lefts hurting Mosley. Even when Mosley lands a punch he doesn't seem to have much on it and Pacquiao is just shaking it off and coming right back. A big left hand from Pacquiao snaps Mosley's head back. Good round for Pacquiao,

ROUND 10: Pacquiao lands a right hook. Pacquiao charges forward with a combination, then there's a clash of heads. Pacquiao is continuing to land hard shots and all of a sudden DOWN GOES PACQUIAO! Wow! That looked like a slip, not a knockdown, to me, but the ref ruled it a knockdown. Pacquiao now goes on the attack and has Mosley backing away. Replays clearly show that Mosley stepped on Pacquiao's foot and pushed him, and that shouldn't have been ruled a knockdown.

ROUND 11: Now Pacquiao is going for the kill. He wants to knock Mosley out. Mosley is offering almost nothing as the fans are chanting "Knock him out! Knock him out!" Pacquiao is doing his best to give the fans what they want. A hard exchange that includes a counter right from Mosley, a rare piece of offense from him. Pacquiao goes back on the attack with a left to the body. An easy round for Pacquiao

ROUND 12: They hug in the center of the ring to start the final round. The fans are chanting "Manny! Manny!" Pacquiao is doing his best to knock Mosley out, but Mosley is tying him up, backing away and otherwise going into retreat. Pacquiao lands a hard left. Mosley's face is badly swollen, and he's just going to try to survive the final minute. Pacquiao dominates the round but can't put Mosley down. I give it to Pacquiao, 10-9, and this fight is over.

Pacquiao vs Mosley Round 3 Knockdown with video

Manny Pacquiao showed once again why he's the biggest attraction in boxing, dominating Shane Mosley on Saturday night to win a one-sided unanimous decision in the biggest fight of the year.

Although Mosley came out fighting hard with a good first round, it was all Pacquiao from there on. Pacquiao knocked Mosley down in the third and dominated the fight throughout. Technically Mosley knocked Pacquiao down in the 10th round, but that was a mistake, as Pacquiao fell when Mosley tripped him.






 
All three judges awarded it to Pacquiao by lopsided scores: 119-108, 120-108 and 120-107. According to the pay-per-view broadcast, Pacquiao landed exactly 100 more punches than Mosley did (182 to 82) and threw more than twice as many punches (552 to 260).

Pacquiao acknowledged after the fight that there was some disappointment among his fans that he couldn't knock Mosley out, despite dominating him for 12 rounds.

"I tried my best for a good fight, to make people happy," Pacquiao said. "In the middle rounds my legs got tight. I went to move but it was tight. ... I have to work on my legs because my legs were hurt."

Pacquiao improved his record to 53-3-2, and he is now on a 14-fight winning streak. Widely regarded as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, the only remaining question for him is whether there are any challenges remaining. Every boxing fan wants to see Pacquiao fight Floyd Mayweather Jr., but if that fight doesn't happen, there just aren't many good options for Pacman.

Mosley, who fell to 46-7-1, said afterward that he knew he had been beaten by a better man.

"I thought I did a pretty good job," Mosley said. "Manny is an exceptional fighter. Good speed and power. Power that I've never gotten hit with before. ... He's a fighter, he's a warrior."

Mosley told Pacquiao in the ring afterward, "You're the real pound-for-pound king now."

No one would argue with that: Pacquiao is the best fighter in the sport.

Pacquiao to lose WBO title, says Mosley camp - gmanews

James Prince, the popular rap mogul who is Sugar Shane Mosley's adviser, vows one of the biggest upsets in boxing history will be pulled off over the weekend.

And Manny Pacquiao, he guarantees, will be at the losing end of it.

"On Saturday, one of the biggest upsets in the history of boxing will be made, with Mosley beating Pacquiao," said Prince.

A 6-1 underdog, the 39-year-old Mosley will challenge Pacquiao for the latter's World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Prince then recalled how six years ago, also in Las Vegas, when underdog Diego Corrales survived two early knockdowns in pulling off a 10th round technical knockout victory over Jose Luis Castillo to win the World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight title in a bout voted as one of the greatest in prize fighting history.

"That's the kind of championship (fight) Mosley will be bringing inside the ring on Saturday," added Prince.

Mosley's chief trainer, Nazeem Richardson, would rather play it safe.

Although Mosley may be way past his prime, Richardson, reminded everybody that the challenger isn't just an average fighter.

In his own words, Mosley is a legend.

"You're not talking about an ordinary guy. You're talking about a special guy, a guy who is legend," said Richardson of Mosley.

Richardson, who will be training Mosley for the fourth straight fight, was the one who kept the
three-time champion in shape when he pummeled Antonio Margarito to win the World Boxing Association (WBA) 147-pound title belt two years ago.

And while Mosley's last two fights resulted to a loss opposite Floyd Mayweather Jr. and a split draw decision against Sergio Mora, Richardson insists the challenger remains in top condition especially against his 12-round showdown with the 32-year-old Pacquiao.

"You have to understand that as old as Michael Jordan might be now, he can beat us most of here one on one. He can still play the game and probably can still start out for an NBA team," added Mosley’s trainer.

A heavy underdog, Richardson vowed Mosley will give the reigning champion and world's top pound-for-pound fighter a good fight.

"Sugar Shane Mosley doesn't have to match Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao is a phenomenal athlete. Mosley is bringing in his own set of weapons to the plate and Pacquiao will see weapons he haven’t seen of late," he stressed. - JVP, GMA News

Ex-promoter expects Mosley to beat Pacquiao - ABS CBN

MANILA, Philippines – A former promoter of “Sugar” Shane Mosley is confident that his former ward will beat Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao.

Cedric Kushner said in an Examiner.com report that “absolutely, Shane has a chance to win” in the 2 boxers’ welterweight clash, which will be held on May 7 (May 8 in Manila) at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"I don't wish to speak in riddles so I'll make it plain. I am picking Shane to win this fight over Pacman," the head of Cedric Kushner Promotions Ltd. said.

The fight will put Pacquiao’s World Boxing Organization welterweight belt at stake.

The Filipino has the apparent advantage in terms of speed, but Mosley has the experience and the power too, Kushner said.

"But I will go further than that. I'm picking Shane to win this fight. He's been one of the great fighters of his generation and he retains his power. I also think that this might be the time, might be the fight where as great as Manny is and has been, he's going to be impacted negatively from fighting a bigger man,” he said.

Kushner, however, admitted that Pacquiao definitely has the goods to stop Mosley.

"On the other hand, you ask me if Pacquiao can stop Shane? I'd say that Manny can stop anybody but Shane takes a helluva rap, he's always had a solid chin. Sure, Manny is more than capable of hurting Shane," he said, "but the opposite is also true."

Kushner, who has trained Mosley when the boxer was still in the flyweight division, has spent the past 30 years in the boxing industry.

Kushner has promoted 30 world champions, including Mosley.

he has also staged more than 300 world title fights in North America, Europe, Asia, South America, Australia and Africa.

Floyd to keep tabs on Pacquiao vs Mosley

MANILA, Philippines – Despite being inactive from boxing, controversial boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. is expected to keep close tabs on the welterweight title fight between Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao and “Sugar Shane Mosley.


"I'm pretty sure he'll be watching it,” Mayweather’s father, Floyd Sr., told Boxingscene.com.

Floyd Sr. said his son might even opt to watch the fight live at the MGM Grand Arena, which is located in Mayweather’s hometown of Las Vegas.

He, however, said that his son may get too much attention if he shows up to watch the fight.
“He might be there [inside the MGM Grand] but I doubt he will be there though. He'd get into too much trouble up there anyways if he goes to places like that," said Floyd Sr.

Pacquiao, Mayweather’s closest rival in pound-for-pound status, is set to defend his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title against Mosley on May 7 (May 8 in Manila).

Mayweather also took on Mosley in May last year, defeating the aging boxer via unanimous decision.
Despite repeated attempts by fight promoters to pit him against Pacquiao, Mayweather has remained inactive from boxing for nearly a year.

He is also facing legal problems.

He has a pending felony case stemming from a dispute last September with former girlfriend Josie Harris. Mayweather is also accused of poking at the face of a homeowners' association security guard during a scuffle last November over parking tickets.

Despite the hurdles, Floyd Sr. is confident that his son will eventually face Pacquiao in a highly anticipated super fight.

“If you get somebody who wants to fight on the up and up, on the same terms like it's supposed to be, the fight should go on. The fight would have been on,” said Floyd Sr.

“They all know why the fight didn't take off," he added.

Pacquiao vs. Mosley Fight camp 360 Episode 2 debuted this Saturday evening. The Pacquiao-Mosley Fight Camp 360 series returned after a two week hiatus. Episode 1 had originally aired on CBS during the channel's March Madness coverage. Now, episode 2 debuted on Showtime Saturday evening before all of the big fights of the night. Take a look at what happened in the second episode of Pacquiao Mosley Fight Camp 360 right here.


As usual, we begin this episode of Fight Camp 360 by taking a look back at last week's episode. In the first airing, we were introduced to the buildup of the fight, the press conferences and photo shoots, the beginning of their training camps, and more. Now, by the time Episode 2 of Pacquiao-Mosley Fight Camp 360 aired, it's just two weeks until fight night, which means that the big day is rapidly approaching, and training camps have been full steam ahead for quite some time.

Mosley calls the opportunity to fight and beat Pacquiao a dream come true, and it can only help his standing in the history of the sport. Freddie Roach is taking the challenge from Mosley very seriously, because of his talent, dedication and his experience.

We're in the Philippines now, and we see Roach at the gym, as he talks up a young fighter who just made his professional debut. Roach is waiting for Pacquiao to get to the gym, and Roach starts getting stressed when he's late and he listens to how Pacquiao has been distracted with appointments and other issues.

Roach talks about how Pacquiao has always been loyal to him even when others around Pacquiao tried to get him fired. Pacquiao chimes in later saying how they're more than just boxer-trainer, they are friends and brothers. Roach also says that Pacquiao is like a son to him. The two work on the mitts together, and Roach says he would die for Manny Pacquiao, and he believes Manny would do the same.

Back at camp Mosley, he's talking about the family environment he has there, and how they are all enjoying themselves. Naazim Richardson is joking and telling stories about Bernard Hopkins, and Mosley's son talks about coming up to camp with his father, and how Rock Allen, Richardson's son, is also there and everyone is helping one another.

Now we're at the offices of Top Rank, and Bob Arum talks about his time in the business. He mentions how his first fight was Muhammad Ali vs. George Chuvalo, and Ali earned $300,000-$400,000. He says that Pacquiao is guaranteed $20 million for the upcoming fight, and Mosley is getting $5 million guaranteed, and he's glad that fighters are getting the lion's share of the money that they are earning. The rest of the Top Rank team is talking about tickets and how they are completely gone, and they can't accommodate all of the requests from special interests and individuals looking to get in at the last minute.

Back with Pacquiao, Alex Ariza is talking about how this training camp is different from others. This time, he has actually been stagnant and not training for 5 months, so he's starting from scratch and needs to be even more dedicated. We see Pacquiao getting up at 5:30 am and doing his training out on the mountains and on the roadside, shadow boxing, doing situps, running hills with dogs, fans watching him the whole way.

At Big Bear, Mosley works the heavy bag and says he doesn't need anyone to tell him how good he is. He gets to the gym and does the hard work and tells himself. His son talks about Mosley's desire to show the world that they have been wrong not giving him a chance in the fight, and that this is his legacy.

In the Philippines, we see some jokes and silliness at Pacquiao's training camp. Buboy Fernandez talks about growing up with Pacquiao and about how he turned him into a trainer, and he didn't know about boxing before. Roach tells a story about how against Cotto, Buboy was crying in the corner about Pacquiao not getting off the ropes, when they had made the game plan to do that and Pacquiao was basically trying to prove them wrong. We see Amir Khan in camp with Pacquiao training.

Pacquiao does an impression of Khan's voice which is actually quite good. Roach mentions how he had to drag Khan and his camp out there because he needs to go where Pacquiao goes.

People from the Mo'Nique show visit Mosley at his camp. Everyone jokes around and gets some good laughs, it's all to stay at ease, because things will be getting more and more serious. With that, we flash to Pacquiao furiously working the mitts, and Roach talking about how Pacquiao works harder today than he ever did.

Then we see a montage of Mosley training and talking about putting it in his spirit and soul, and just eating, sleeping and training and repeating that. Roach says that trying to find the next Pacquiao is unfair, because he doesn't think what he has done will ever be done again, ever. We see training clips spliced in from each fighter and his camp as they hit the bags and push themselves to be better than ever.

Finally, we get a glimpse at next week's episode. Pacquiao and Roach will be flying back to the United States to get to the Wild Card Gym, the training continues to intensify for both teams, Mosley says a final goodbye to his girlfriend before the fight, and so forth.

Shane twits on Manny showdown: Ako excited

MANILA, Philippines - Shane Mosley is looking forward to a good, clean fight with Manny Pacquiao.
It’s not really surprising to hear it from the former world champion from Pomona, California because he seems to be a very nice person on and off the ring.

But to hear it from him, spoken and written in Filipino, on his Twitter account, is something else.
“I tumingin forward sa magandang malinis na laban,” wrote the former world champion on Twitter a few days ago.

“Ako excited,” he added.

The 39-year-old American is into Twitter, the very popular social networking site, and has got 41,121 followers under his name.

Pacquiao is also into it, and as of yesterday the Filipino champion, the most popular Filipino athlete ever, has 33,339 followers.

It’s nothing compared to the 136,840 followers of Phil Younghusband of the Philippine Azkals football team or his other teammates.

But what’s important is that Mosley and Pacquiao, who will square off on May 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, are reaching out to their fans.

“Today I will hit Buboy’s belly while Freddie is away,” was Pacquiao’s latest post on Twitter four days ago, referring to his trainers Buboy Fernandez and Freddie Roach.

Mosley has been more active on Twitter lately, and has been in touch with Pinoy fight fans.
“Pag-papadala ibig at pag-galang sa mga tao sa Pilipinas (Here’s love and respect to the people of the Philippines),” he said last week, also on Twitter.

Mosley also said, “Hindi ko nais maliitin ng isang mandirigma Filipino ako igalang ang kanilang espiritu (I don’t want to belittle the Filipino warrior (Pacquiao).”

Mosley must have received very nice words from Filipino fight fans in return that he wrote the other day, “Filipino fans gave me lots of love today.”

Back to the fight, Mosley twitted before noon yesterday he’s been “doing great and in tip-top shape.”
He also expressed confidence of his chances for the forthcoming fight, saying “my energy is great and I know I will be able to get good, hard punches onto Pacquiao.”

Mosley said Pacquiao’s style suits him well, and the Filipino’s relentless attacks will lead to his own downfall.

“I have a lot of power in both hands. I know Pacquiao will go right to the attack, which is a great advantage for me,” Mosley said.

A lot of people are now asking where Mosley’s been getting his lessons on the Filipino language.
His publicist, Suzanne Summerville, is a Filipina.

“I am a Filipina,” she said.

Why Mosley is dangerous

MANILA, Philippines - Even as defending WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao has been installed a 9-1 favorite, he’s not taking Sugar Shane Mosley lightly in their 12-round bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 7 because all indications point to the classy boxer-puncher as a dangerous foe.

Here are some reasons why Mosley is a serious challenger.

• He has one-punch knockout power in either hand, particularly the right. In boxing, all it takes is a single connection and the fight could be over. Mosley boasts a knockout rate of 85 percent or 39 KOs of 46 wins, compared to Pacquiao’s 73 percent or 38 KOs of 52 wins.

• He’s the first African-American whom Pacquiao will face. If you’re not used to the rhythm and style of an African-American athlete, you could be in big trouble. Pacquiao has sparred with African-Americans like Shawn Porter, Rashad Holloway and Karim Mayfield but it’s a different atmosphere when the bell rings for a real fight on pay-per-view.

• He’s the only fighter to defeat the legendary Oscar de la Hoya twice.

• He’s the only fighter to knock out rugged Mexican warrior Antonio Margarito who went the distance with Pacquiao.

• He’s the only fighter to beat former world lightmiddleweight champion Fernando Vargas twice, both by knockout.

• He’s never been knocked out – all his losses were on points. And only Vernon Forrest was able to floor Mosley, doing it twice in the second round but Sugar Shane survived the threat to last the full route in losing a decision. In contrast, Pacquiao has been floored by Rustico Torrecampo, Medgeon 3-K Battery, Nedal Hussein, Serikzhan Yeshmagambetov and Marco Antonio Barrera (although the knockdown should’ve been ruled a slip as shown in a replay). Mosley’s strong chin is an obvious asset.

• He’s the “longest” fighter ever to battle Pacquiao with a startling 74-inch wingspan. That translates to a massive seven-inch reach advantage for Mosley. Two Pacquiao victims, Margarito and De la Hoya, both measure 73 inches in wingspan.

• He’s comfortable fighting in the 147-pound division. Mosley has weighed over 142 pounds for 22 bouts since 1999. Pacquiao has fought in only four fights weighing over 142 since 2008. Pacquiao scaled 142 pounds for De la Hoya, 144 for Miguel Cotto, 145 3/4 for Joshua Clottey and 144 1/2 for Margarito. Mosley will likely weigh five to 10 pounds more than Pacquiao when they square off. The edge in heft may be an advantage or a disadvantage for Mosley.

• He’s trained by the legendary Nazim Richardson who also takes care of Bernard Hopkins and IBF cruiserweight champion Steve Cunningham. Richardson is known in fight circles as a master strategist and tactician. Although he is not as renowned as Freddie Roach, Richardson can’t be considered a slouch. He’s an expert in spotting flaws and exploiting weaknesses. He’s a whiz in revving up old engines and transforming them into mean machines. To Richardson, age is all in the mind. Hopkins, his other ageless gladiator, remains competitive at 46.

• He’s intelligent and crafty. Mosley used a classic boxing style to confound De la Hoya, not once but twice. He even switch-hit to confuse the Golden Boy. Against Pacquiao, Mosley is expected to put pressure on the Filipino icon and force a slugfest. Mosley’s deadliest combination is a left hook to the body and a right hook to the head. Sugar Shane once said he emulates Roberto Duran in the ring.

• He has experience on his side. Mosley turned pro in 1993, two years before Pacquiao, and has boxed 376 rounds in 53 fights. Pacquiao has boxed 329 rounds in 57 bouts. Mosley has engaged in 19 world title matches and Pacquiao, 16. Mosley racked up a record of 38-0, with 35 KOs, before tasting his first defeat nine years after turning pro. Pacquiao raced to an 11-0 record, with only three KOs, before suffering his initial setback to Torrecampo in 1996.

• He knows how to deal with southpaws. Mosley has battled five lefthanders in his career and lost to only one – Winky Wright. Against Luis Collazo, he scored a knockdown and breezed to an easy victory on points.

• He fights like Juan Manuel Marquez. Pacquiao had difficulty against the Mexican in two bouts. Marquez, a technician, counter-punched and repeatedly found an opening for his right hand down the middle, into the heart of Pacquiao’s defense. Mosley will try to do the same on May 7.

• He’s still got heart. Against Sergio Mora last September, Mosley defied the laws of aging and turned back the hands of time to win the final two rounds in salvaging a 12-round split draw in Los Angeles. Sugar Shane’s display of endurance was an inspiration to all senior citizens.
Jeff Ryan of The Ring Magazine put the fight in perspective when he wrote:  

“At a battle-scarred 32 years of age and following 16 years in the ring, 57 fights, and a jump of about 40 pounds in weight throughout his career, Pacquiao is due to turn old overnight or at the very least, have an off-night, particularly if the absence of a Floyd Mayweather fight robs him of some motivation and his political career in the Philippines becomes more of a distraction...and if that night arrives this May, Mosley (even a 39-year-old version in decline) has the game, experience, strength, and chin to make things interesting.”

So in the final analysis, the Pacquiao-Mosley fight couldn’t be as one-sided as the odds indicate.
