D-League Massacre: Maynilad blows past Powerade by 52 points

Maynilad hardly broke out a sweat in whipping Junior Powerade, 119-67, on Tuesday’s first game of a double header in the PBA D-League at the Oreta Gym.

In scoring the most lopsided win of the league’s inaugural staging, the Water Dragons were able to pull away as early as the first five minutes and were never seriously threatened from there.

PBA head statistician Fidel Mangonon III confirmed the 52-point win was the most lopsided in the league. Ironically, it was Maynilad itself which established the previous biggest winning margin that was 32 points.

“The win was the most lopsided since Maynilad’s 106-74 win over Café France on April 5," added Mangonon.

Maynilad established the feat despite missing the services of Sudan Daniel, who was advised to rest his injured ankle and recuperate in time for the NCAA cage wars.

But coach Frankie Lim was back from a one-game suspension and former Red Lion, Borgie Hermida, who was acquired in a buyout from PBA team Barako Bull, quickly made his presence felt quickly to establish order in the Water Dragons’ offense.

The pint-sized guard scored 10 points, dished out 10 assists and plucked down six rebounds. More importantly, Hermida was able to show his leadership, something which he did with the Red Lions squad in their last collegiate season.

“Na-miss ko talaga maglaro kasama yung teammates ko. At tsaka hindi lang naman kasi ito basta-bastang game, dala rin namin yung pangalan ng school dito," he said.

“Career move ito para sa akin. Nagpa-buyout ako sa Barako kasi ayaw ko naman ma-tengga. At tsaka gusto ko ring maglaro hangga’t fresh pa [from college basketball]," explained Hermida.

But Lim, the Lions’ multi-titled champion coach, believes it’s their defense that played a key role in the easy victory.

“We surprised them with our zone and we took some great shots na nagkapatong-patong nga. We finally ended the losing streak. Sana tumuloy-tuloy na nga sa PBA at sa Fil-Oil," said Lim.

The atmosphere inside the coliseum has taken its toll on some of the players.

“Baka himatayin ako mamaya sa court habang naglalaro sa sobrang init," quipped Dave Marcelo while they were warming up.

But the Water Dragoins were hardly affected by the uncomfortable conditions, with Hermida, Marcelo and Garvo Lanete spearheading an early Maynilad breakaway to post a 24-3 lead with a little over three minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Anjo Caram and Melo Lim joined in the scoring fray in the fourth quarter behind their long-range bombs as Maynilad buried the Tigers.

The Tigers’ James Martinez and Moriah Gingerich desperately tried to get their team back in the game by scoring two three-pointers each, but the Water Dragons’ firepower were in full display and proved to be too much for Powerade. - KY, RCJ, GMA News

Powerade faces Maynilad

A rejuvenated Junior Powerade squad hopes to win its second straight when it clashes with fancied Maynilad Water Tuesday in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Oreta gym in Malabon.


MANILA, Philippines — After starting their campaign with two straight losses, the Tigers barged into the win column by stunning erstwhile unbeaten Cebuana Lhuillier, 77-73, on April 7 at the Emilio Aguinaldo College gym in Manila.

In that game, coach Ricky Dandan got a big game from center Magi Sison who had 16 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks while drawing solid efforts from Fil-Ams John Smith and Mark Jeffries and returning UP guard Mike Gamboa.

Dandan, also UP’s coach, hopes to ride on the crest of this upset victory when they clash with a Water Dragons team that is looking to bounce back from a disappointing 77-67 loss to FCA last week.
Maynilad led by six points in the third quarter but the Cultivators erupted in the payoff period to fall to solo fi fth in Group B at 2-2.

For the second straight game, Maynilad will play sans American center Sudan Daniel who is nursing a knee injury he suffered during San Beda’s Filoil preseason loss to Ateneo on April 9.

But coach Frankie Lim will returns from a one-game suspension plus added former Barako Bull guard Borgie Hermida, an ex-Bedan, to the roster.

Gametime is set at 2 p.m. before RnW Pacific Pipes and Freego Jeans try to end their respective losing skids at 4 p.m.

After beating PC Gilmore, 76-72, on March 12, Pacific Pipes, despite the presence of formerPBL MVP Vic Manuel, ex-pro Jim Viray and Rey Leynes, lost its succeeding games to Blackwater and North Luzon Expressway to fall to 1-2 in Group A.

Freego, which will be led by current Adamson stars Eric Camson and Lester Alvarez, seeks to enter the win column after going to 0-3 following a defeat to Group A co-leader Blackwater on April 7.

Max! Bond fends off Cobra rally in PBA D-League

MANILA, Philippines – Rudy Lingganay pumped in a layup with three seconds left to boost Max! Bond to a 77-75 triumph over Cobra Thursday at the PBA Developmental League at the Lyceum Gym in Manila.

Max! Bond, led by stocky guard Rudy Lingganay, fended off a blistering rally by Cobra in the last two minutes to force a four-way tie at the top spot in group B.

Standouts from the Asean Basketball League topscored for the Sumos as Lingganay finished with 13 points while forward Jun Jun Cabatu added 19.

The Sumos, mentored by Pido Jarencio, coach of the University of Sto. Tomas Tigers, were leading by nine with less than three minutes left before the Ironmen posted their run.

Meanwhile, Blackwater also got a share of the lead in group A by downing Pharex, 86-75, in the first game.

Hot shooting wingman Andrian Celada, main man for Arellano in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, exploded for 27 points.

A huge third quarter run for Blackwater gave them a whopping 16-point lead before Pharex tried to storm back in the game to no avail.

PBA: NLEX beats PC Gilmore, 88-87

MANILA, Philippines—Filipino-American Clifford Hodge completed an and-one play with 3.6 ticks remaining to cap off a stunning comeback and lift fancied NLEX to an 88-87 win over PC Gilmore Tuesday in the PBA Developmental League at the JCSGO gym in Cubao.

Hodge, who underscored his clutch performance with 21 points, got the better of PC Gilmore's Macky Acosta in that one-on-one sequence en route to the victory that zoomed NLEX at the helm in group A.

"We're just happy and lucky to get this one," said head coach Boyet Fernandez of NLEX.

The Road Warriors, which played sans the animated Calvin Abueva who was ejected in the first quarter, were kept at bay for most of the contest.

When the shooting of Road Warriors started to catch on, they grabbed hold of the driver's seat early in the fourth quarter only to relinquish it to the Wizards.

But lapses by the Wizards, who led by as many as 13, down the stretch cost them the game even as they missed on a clear cut chance at the buzzer.

With 1.1 seconds the clock, Jet Vidal misfired on a runner off an inbound pass by Allan Mangahas.
In the curtain raiser, FCA claimed rights to a second place tie with Cebuana Lhuiller in Group B after socking Maynilad, 77-67.

Four FCA shirts pitched in double digit outputs lead by JR Guerilla, a veteran in the amateur ranks, with 15 points.

FCA took full control of game in the last period as it erected a comfortable 12 point lead, the biggest of the game.

Maynilad, banking on its core of San Beda wards, even rode a 39-37 advantage after a helter skelter first half.

But the Water Dragons were unable to sustain the lead, which padded on to the largest at seven points, as the Cultivators started to connect on their shots.

"It's a good thing my players responded in the second half and played hard," said Cultivators head coach Arsenio Dysanco.

PC Gilmore and Maynilad dropped to fourth place in their respective groups.
