PHL Azkals settle for 1-1 draw with Myanmar in AFC Challenge Cup

A last-minute goal by Myanmar denied the Philippine Azkals football team an outright victory in the AFC Challenge Cup Group Round as the host team salvaged a 1-1 draw against the Filipinos on Monday at the Thuwana Stadium here..

James Younghusband broke the dry spell spanning nearly both halves by hitting a penalty kick in the 76th minute.

But the host squad managed to equalize in extra time.

A free kick by Khin Maung Lwin off a foul by Simon Greatwich gave Myanmar the game-tying goal in the 92nd minute, with barely a minute left of stoppage time.

Despite the draw, the Azkals earned a point in the standings. A win would have given the Filipinos three points, however, which could have given the squad an early advantage in this group stage format.

In a report made by 24 Oras, Phil Younghusband, who failed to see action in the Azkals’ game against Myanmar due to a hamstring tear, couldn’t hide his disappointment over the outcome and posted it on his Twitter account.

Akala ko mananalo na tayo," said Younghusband.

Azkals coach Michael Weiss said the team deserved “not to win the game," according to sportswriter Cedelf Tupas of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, who was sent to Myanmar to cover the matches.

“It was the correct result," said Weiss. “We dominated the second half but we were too defensive in the first half."
Tupas also mentioned in his report the impressive showing of Angel Aldeguer Guirado, the newest member of the Azkals.

“It’s a pity Angel and Phil are not playing together. It would’ve been a great combination," said Tupas. - KY, RCJ, GMA News
