New York Knicks Land Carmelo Anthony Ending "Melo-Drama"

The New York Knicks have landed Denver Nuggets All Star Forward Carmelo Anthony in a blockbuster deal that gives the franchise their second superstar, alongside Amare Stoudemire, putting an end to the year long Melo-Drama.

The deal, first reported by the Denver Post on Monday, is set to be finalized Tuesday during a conference call with the NBA office according to a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The Knicks would send Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Fallinari, Timofey Mozgov, and a 2014 first-round draft pick to the Nuggets, who would get additional picks and cash.

Along with Anthony, New York would acquire Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter, and Renaldo Balkman, according to the Post.

ESPN's Chris Broussard reports the swap is a three team deal including the Minnesota Timberwolves which would acquire Eddy Curry and Anthony Randolph from the Knicks for Corey Brewer.

The deal arguably makes the Knicks, who would hope Anthony could be in uniform Wednesday when they host the Milwaukee Bucks, a more legitimate contender in a stacked Eastern Conference with the Boston Celtics, Miami Heat, and Chicago Bulls.

Especially the rivalry between the Heat and the Knicks which is sure to produce some dramatic flare to for the next few years that could rival the 90's battles between both teams.

Anthony is best friends with Heat superstars Lebron James and Dwayne Wade and they will have their first chance to enhance their relationship in a nationally televised rivalry game against the Heat on Sunday night at 8pm in Miami.

The New Jersey Nets, however, have been left out in the cold.  According to the New York Post, the Nets were looking to send two first-round draft picks to Denver and deal Devin Harris to Dallas in order to receive Mozgov and Felton from the Nuggets plus a first-round pick from the Mavericks.

That didn't happen and the NBA trade deadline is fast approaching on Thursday.

As for the Denver Nuggets, Coach George Karl has mixed emotions.

"All trades for coaches are sad, there's happy and sad. I'm glad it's over, I'm glad it's an opportunity to reinvent," Karl said as he got into his SUV outside the Pepsi Center on Monday night. "I think everybody handled it as classy as you can handle it. There's some sadness to it, there always will be. In the same, it's time to move on, reinvent."

The Nuggets have explored an Anthony trade since he refused to sign the three-year contract extension worth nearly $65 million they offered him last summer. They appeared on the verge of sending him to the Nets on multiple occasions, but the Knicks increased their offer enough to land Anthony, who was believed to prefer New York all along.

"I think Chauncey will go down as one of the greatest winners," Karl said. "His record of seven or eight conference finals is, I mean, that's incredible. I think that's who he is, that's what he stands for. He brought one of them to us. Last year we had a miserable ending. I think there's many people, including myself, that will be sad for Chauncey. I know he loves Denver and we love him, but things happen. There's decisions that have to be made. "

"I'm 100 percent behind the decision we made, even though it will be dangerous and there won't be the veteran point guard back there," Karl added. "Felton, I thought was having a great season this year. But I think Ty (Lawson) and Felton are going to have a great challenge to live up to what Chauncey has given us in past years." Asked who his starting point guard would be, Karl said, "Probably Ty," then got into his maroon SUV and drove away.

MANILA, Philippines - Themselves awed by the 2011 NBA All-Star festivities, top officials of the Philippine Basketball Association now look forward to a grand ball in the staging of its 2011 All-Star Week on May 18-23.

It could really be a great spectacle with no less than the island paradise of Boracay chosen to host the first PBA All-Star Week under league commissioner Chito Salud.

There will also be outreach programs to be held in the nearby Carabao Island.

The keenly awaited mid-season classic will be dubbed “Hala Bora!” hinting at non-stop fun, thrill and excitement through the six-day event.

“Just everybody who hears that it’s going to be in Boracay is excited to be there,” said Salud.

“Emphasis is on outreach program. We’ll also hold a beach party where our players will mingle with the local and foreign tourists. This is one way of helping promote the country’s tourism program,” Salud also said.

The All-Star Game pitting the North stars and the South stars highlights the festivities on May 23. Balloting for the starting fives of both teams start Feb. 27.

It will be the 22nd edition of the PBA All-Star Week since it was institutionalized in 1989. The Veterans squad then of coach Baby Dalupan nipped the Rookies-Sophomores-Juniors team, 132-130. Boy Cabahug, a player from the losing team, was the winner of the MVP plum.
Last year, the North All-Stars nosed out their South counterparts, 133-132, with Gabe Norwood winning the MVP honors in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

“I look forward to a grand ball. Aside from the usual events, we’ll hold outreach programs that include tree-planting, coastal cleanup, hospital visits and basketball clinics,” said Salud.

A possible addition in the side events is a slam dunk contest among PBA imports.

“We’ll take a look at our imports. Baka may magagaling sa slam dunk, eh di paglaban-labanin namin,” Salud said.

Last year, Nino Canaleta topped a stellar cast of slam-dunkers to pocket an unprecedented fourth crown.

Mark Macapagal, on the other hand, ruled the three-point shootout.

Meanwhile, the PBA has crafted the format for the inaugural staging of the PBA Developmental League which unwraps March 12 at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo.
The 14 participating teams are divided into two groups, playing single round in each bracket in the preliminary phase.

The top teams from each group automatically make the semifinals with the rest left to dispute the two remaining semis berths in knockout playoffs.

The semis will also be a pair of KO games with the winners disputing the crown in a best-of-three championship series.

Bracketed in Group A are Black Water (Arellano Chiefs), City of Antipolo, Freego (Adamson Falcons), Metro Pacific Toll Corp. (San Sebastian Stags), Pacific Pipes, Pharex and PC Gilmore.

Comprising Group B are Ani, Café France (CEU), Cebu Lhuillier, Cobra, Max Bond (UST Tigers), Maynilad Water (San Beda) and Powerade (UP Maroons).

Submission of lineup is March 4.

Danish Additions Make the Philippines Look Formidable

Posted by chardyboy on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 0 comments

 source: http://philboxing.com/news/story-51408.html

According to our passionate Azkal (the Philippine national football team) followers and researchers, there are about 33 identified half foreign bred Filipinos in the list of the Philippine Football Federation. Some of them are only in the minor league levels while others are blue-chip professionals.

Since the time the Azkals rose to prominence, Fil-foreign footbal players started knocking on the doors of the PFF hoping to represent the Philippine colors in the international football field.

As recent media releases showed, there are a few lucky Fil-foreigners who have been selected in the pool of players for the Azkals squad that will represent the Philippines in various international tournaments. Specifically consisting these new prospects are three Filipino-Danish footballers.

Let us look at the various backgrounds of each player.

Dennis Cagara - is a 25-yr. old half-Filipino professional footballer from Denmark. Dennis is a 5-8 stag who played as a midfielder early in his career but has switched as a fullback as scouts saw his toughness on defense.

In the year 2002 at the age of 17, Dennis entered the Danish Super League with Brondby IF making him the youngest soccer player who ever played in the prestigious Danish football league.

Unlike most of the Azkals' Fil-foreigner prospects, Dennis has the distinction as the only half-Filipino prospect who ever played in the European elite Bondesliga of Germany for Hertha BSC. Bondesliga is regarded as one of the toughest professional football league in Europe along side England’s English Premier League and Spain’s La Liga.

With Cagara’s soccer career that spans 10 years from the early 2000 being a prominent youth national team mainstay for Denmark up to the current mostly with the Danish Super Liga should make Cagara as one of the most seasoned prospect for the Philippine Azkals.
Scouts described Dennis as an accomplished defender and is technically sound on the offensive set.

There is no doubt that Dennis Cagara can bring a lot of experience for the youthful Filipino Azkals.

Jerry Lucena – is another Danish-Filipino that is being eyed to reinforce the Azkals. Lucena is a 5-10 midfielder for AGF Aarhus who unlike Dennis Cagara still has a live contract with the first division Danish Football team.

Now at 30, Lucena has 11 years of competitive football experience way back from the early 2000 as a mainstay of the U21 Denmark national team.

Lucena may have the most solid credentials among the Azkals' Fil-foreign prospects as he is the only one who was close to becoming an official senior national team member for his country in 2006.

The Danish Football Association has a yearly program of selecting a pool of players in the beginning of the year which they call the Denmark League XI. These players are called up for their possible inclusion to the final line up of the national team. Lucena was part of the Danish national pool in 2006 but narrowly missed the cut for the final roster of the Danish national team in 2006.

Scouts described Lucena as a player who has a good eye for the game and handles the ball pretty well.

Reports from Denmark said that Lucena has confirmed his participation for the Azkals.
Michael Falkesgaard - is another 20-year old professional footballer from Denmark. Michael is a 6-2 goal keeper for top Danish football professional team Brondby IF.

Brondby IF is the second winningest football club in the history of the Danish Super League.
Falkesgaard never became the starting goalie for the Danish youth national team but his consistent selection through the U18, U19 and U20 Danish national team speaks well of the promising talent of this young half Filipino which paved the way of his signing with top-notch Danish first division pro football team Brandby IF.

Denmark and notably Germany both have rich winning traditions in international football. For both countries, football is their national sport and is being followed with passion. This fact should give us an assurance that these Fil-foreign prospects from these two countries can really uplift the quality of game of the Azkals.

Imagining the future for the Azkals having Lucena, Cagara and Schrock play alongside the Younghusbands, Jason de Jong, Ian Araneta, Emilio Caligdong, Aly Borromeo, Anton Del Rosario, Ray Anthony Johnson, Simon Greatwich, Rob Gier and Neil Ethridge may make the Philippines as the biggest surprise in the current AFC Challenge Cup and may come out as formidable as Malaysia and Indonesia in the next version of the AFC Suzuki Cup.

Philippines is slowly but surely moving towards respectability in Asian football. It may take more years to be at the level of Japan, South Korea and North Korea in Asia but as long as they keep on improving, sponsors would find it hard not to support the Azkals paving the way for further international exposure, a sound scouting program of Fil-foreign prospects and development of home grown talent.

University of Santo Tomas (UST) thrashed Ateneo, 5-0, to earn a finals seat in the UAAP men's football tournament on Sunday at the Ateneo Erenchun field.

The Tigers feasted on the Blue Eagles to cement their hold of the No. 2 spot with 22 points following six wins, two draws and two defeats.

Fidel Kue got things going for the Tigers with a goal in the 25th minute before Ronald Bautista added made it 2-0 in the 40th minute.

UST continued with its hot offense with OJ Clarino, David Basa and John Caballero scoring a goal each (55th, 76th and 83rd minute) in the second half.

The Tigers will face top-ranked University of the Philippines in Sunday's 2 p.m. finals (February 27) at the Ateneo Erenchun field with the Fighting Maroons holding a twice-to-beat advantage.

Rookie sensation Jinggoy Valmayor, meanwhile, scored both of UP's goals in the Maroons' morale-boosting 2-0 win over the La Salle Green Archers to enter the finals.

It was Valmayor's eighth goal of the tournament as the Fighting Maroons remained undefeated with 28 points behind nine wins and a draw.

The Green Archers finished the season in third place with 16 points (4-4-2 win-draw-loss).

It was a different story for the UST women's football squad as the Tigresses clinched a twice-to-beat advantage in the finals after beating Far Eastern University, 2-1.

UST got into a tie with the FEU with 16 points (5-1-2) but the Tigresses secured the semis edge due to a higher goal difference.

The women's final will also be played on Sunday at the Erenchun field at 9 a.m.

UST teams hope to win UAAP volley crowns in schools' quadricentennial

The University of Santo Tomas Tigers and Tigresses, the school’s men’s and women’s volleyball teams, are hoping to win the UAAP volleyball crowns as a gift to the school’s quadricentennial celebration.

“That’s what we are aiming to do. We want to win both the men’s and women’s volleyball titles for the school since it will be memorable for us with UST celebrating its 400th anniversary," said Tigresses coach Cesael Delos Santos.

The Tigresses will face the La Salle Green Archers on Wednesday at the start of their best-of-three title showdown at 3 p.m. The UST Tigers will also begin its title bid against the Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws at 1 p.m.

Delos Santos wants his wards to focus on defense, particularly on their blocking and reception, to stay in the hunt for their target back-to-back plum.

“The players really stuck with each other during that game. We just couldn't get it done. We need to increase our intensity in our bid for the championship," said Delos Santos.

“We’re not thinking of our two losses against La Salle in the elimination round. We had the chance to beat them in our last game, but lost our focus in the game. We just need to focus on our defense."

Donaire overtakes Martinez in P4P ranking

Posted by chardyboy on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 0 comments

source:abs-cbnNEWS.com

MANILA, Philippines – Following his sensational 2nd-round knockout victory over Mexican superstar Fernando Montiel, Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire is now ranked among the world’s best just behind fellow Filipino Manny Pacquiao and undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr.

According to latest rankings issued by The Ring magazine, the "bible of boxing", Donaire has overtaken middleweight champion Sergio Martinez of Argentina and world lightweight king Juan Manuel Marquez to become the Top 3 pound-for-pound best.

Pacquiao is the reigning pound-for-pound king at No. 1 followed by Mayweather, who is ranked No. 2.

Donaire’s climb in ranking relegated Martinez to No. 4 and Marquez to No. 5. The Filipino Flash used to occupy the No. 5 spot.

“The decision was made even more difficult because both Martinez and Marquez have recently defended their titles via knockout against top-notch challengers. In the end, however, it was impossible to ignore Donaire’s overpowering performances in his last 10 fights, nine of which he won via knockout or TKO. The ‘Filipino Flash’ is on a helluva roll, one that could conceivably see him climb even higher in future months,” said Nigel Collins, Editor-in-Chief of The Ring magazine.

Included in Donaire's 25-win streak are knockout victories over Vladimir Sidorenko, Hernan Marquez, Raul Martinez and trash-talking Vic Darchinyan. He currently holds a pro record of 26 wins and 1 loss with 18 knockouts.

Aside from nabbing the pound-for-pound list’s Top 3, Donaire also replaced Montiel as the magazine’s No. 1 bantamweight boxer.

From No. 1, Montiel went down to No. 5.

The Filipino Flash scored an outstanding victory over the Mexican champion by scoring a 2nd-round technical knockout.

Donaire stunned Montiel with a looping left hook to the face that sent the Mexican crashing down the canvass with a minute left in the second round.

The dazed Montiel tried to get up but fell again.

When he got up, the referee gave him another chance to exchange with Donaire.

But the Filipino boxer quickly fired a finisher against the defenseless Montiel, prompting the referee to stop the fight.

With the win, Donaire wrested the World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight titles from Montiel.

The Filipino may opt to fight the winner between bantamweight titlist Joseph Agbeko and Abner Mares to become the first Asian undisputed world champion.

The National Basketball Association All-Star Game drew its highest television rating since Michael Jordan’s final appearance as Kobe Bryant was named Most Valuable Player for a record-tying fourth time.
The game at Staples Center in Los Angeles was seen in an average of 5.2 percent of U.S. households on Time Warner Inc.’s TNT, according to preliminary national data, the network said in a news release, citing Nielsen Media Research. That’s 37 percent higher than last year’s rating and the highest since Jordan’s final appearance in an All-Star Game in 2003.
Bryant, of the Los Angeles Lakers, had 37 points and 14 rebounds in the West’s 148-143 win yesterday, joining Hall of Famer Bob Pettit as the only players to claim the MVP award four times.

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet. – With an appreciative crowd watching, the Philippine Azkals kicked off their training stint here on Monday, part of their preparations for their Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup return match against Mongolia on March 16 in Ulan Bator.
The team’s German coach, Hans Michael Weiss, said the weather here, which dipped to as low as 12.4 degrees Celsius Monday, is perfect for his team’s preparations for the expected cold weather in Mongolia.
"We are really looking for cooler temperature. This is good weather," said Weis, whose charges trounced the Mongolians 2-0 in the first leg of the series last Feb. 9.
The coldest temperature here, recorded last Feb. 12, was 12 degrees Celsius.
The Azkals will spend the next seven days at the Benguet State University for their rigid training regimen and acclimatization, choosing the state-owned field over the Philippine Military Academy Grounds and Brent School International playing grounds.
Weiss said the BSU grounds will be perfect training area for the the Azkals, who will train twice a day–from 9 to 11 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. daily. On Wednesday they will have a practice match against the Baguio-Benguet Football Association team.
Frael Aquino, the adviser of the BSU Soccer Club, welcomed the Azkals’ training stint here, saying: "We are deeply elated for the opportunity; bihira lang ang ganito."
Aquino said the Azkals presence at the BSU grounds is expected to create a wider awareness for the sport in Cordillera. "We hope this will create a ripple effect," he said.
Weiss said the team will take advantage of the weather as well as fresh vegetables coming from the highlands that will be part of the team’s diet.

UST spikers to bank on experience vs FEU in UAAP finals

Posted by chardyboy on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 0 comments

source:GMA News

Defending champion University of Santo Tomas will use its experience as it clashes with Far Eastern University in the UAAP men’s volleyball championship beginning this Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.

Game 1 is set at 1 p.m. right before the women’s championship series between UST and La Salle at 3 p.m.

“Sometimes, when we are struggling, we just find a way to catch up on our plays," UST coach Emil Lontoc said.

The Tigers showed their experience to the hilt when they handed FEU its only defeat right on the final day of the elimination round after racking up 13 wins.

UST also got a scare as it was pushed to the limit by La Salle before the taking the win in five sets, 23-25, 20-25, 25-16, 25-16, 15-8, last Saturday.

Lontoc said that his players will also rely on their blocking, something that was evident against La Salle.

“We were really off in the first two sets against La Salle, but our blocking got effective in the third and fourth set. They got their timing back," Lontoc said.

Meanwhile, the FEU camp feels ready to get over its only loss, especially after clinching the finals against University of the Philippines via a two-game sweep last week.

“We really got challenged because of the loss. We learned a lot and I’m sure we are going to use that in the finals," said FEU coach George Pascua, in his sixth year with the team.
Rodolfo Labrador and Nestor Molate, FEU’s top scorers, will be up against UST’s John Paul Torres, Jayson Ramos and Henry Pecana, who played a pivotal role against La Salle in the Final Four.

Blake Griffin wins slam dunk contest

Posted by chardyboy on Monday, February 21, 2011 0 comments

Blake Griffinsource:The Associated Press
LOS ANGELES -- With a gospel choir at midcourt encouraging him to fly, Blake Griffin soared over a car and threw down a two-handed dunk.

The rookie's remarkable leap won the slam dunk contest, and it also drove home the clear point of All-Star Saturday: The Clippers' rising star is just at the beginning of one thrilling ride.

Griffin easily cleared the hood of the 2011 Kia Optima and caught a pass from teammate Baron Davis out of the sunroof while the berobed Crenshaw Select Choir sang "I Believe I Can Fly," winning the 26th NBA dunk contest in iconic style before his hometown fans.

"There's a little pressure on us to really put on a show, but I thought those guys all did a great job," said Griffin, who beat Washington's Javale McGee in the final.

Griffin grew up watching and rewatching every dunk contest on videotape with his brother in Oklahoma, studying the event's evolution. He said the car dunk was his idea from the very start -- a perfect way to show off his combination of raw athleticism and Hollywood flair.

"When they first came to me ... they said there were no rules," Griffin said. "I was like, 'So I can jump over a car? Yeah? Oh, maybe I have to do it now.' I figured I could probably clear it, and Baron came up with the choir."

The move could have petrified the Clippers, with the star-crossed franchise's epic history of bad luck -- even with Griffin, who missed all of last season after breaking his kneecap in the final preseason game before what was supposed to be the No. 1 pick's rookie campaign.
Griffin has become internationally famous for his incredible dunks, but a leap over a car? Sounds like a Clipper Curse moment just waiting to happen.

Clippers owner Donald Sterling was in attendance, perhaps watching between the fingers of the hand over his eyes.

"I could have clipped my foot, I guess," Griffin said. "That's what I was afraid of -- just clip my foot on the side and smash my face into the car. Fortunately, it worked out."

Griffin barely made it out of the first round after missing several attempts at his second dunk of the first round. But with an entire building solidly behind him, McGee and Toronto's DeMar DeRozan -- a Los Angeles native -- really didn't stand a chance despite their own creative dunks at Staples Center.

McGee earned a 99 with two spectacularly inventive slams in the first round, but kicked himself for using a three-ball stunt earlier than he intended after Oklahoma City's Serge Ibaka did something similar to what he had planned for the first round.

"Definitely, he came prepared with a car," said the 7-foot McGee, who scored a perfect 50 by dunking on two baskets simultaneously in his first attempt. "Nothing is going to beat that, unless I bring a plane out or something."

Earlier, Miami's James Jones held off Boston teammates Paul Pierce and Ray Allen to win his first 3-point shootout, and Golden State's Stephen Curry won the Skills Challenge.

But Saturday was all about Griffin, who started the contest with a 360-degree spin dunk before converting a bounce pass off the side of the backboard to finish the first round.
The first rookie All-Star in eight years then brought back an impossibly difficult favorite with his first dunk of the final, sticking his arm into the hoop and hanging from it by his elbow, just as Vince Carter did while winning the 2000 contest.

And when fans saw a car driving out of the arena tunnel, they waved the checkered flag on this race.

Griffin is in the midst of the busiest All-Star weekend for anybody in the NBA's recent history. He scored 14 points in Friday's Rookie Challenge, and he stayed in the dunk contest even after getting chosen for the West squad in Sunday's main event.

All four dunkers distinguished themselves in Hollywood, showing planning and invention in what's sometimes a slapdash event.

Ibaka took the court amid several banners for NBA Africa and promptly threw down a Dr. J-style long-jump dunk from the free throw line. Ibaka retrieved a stuffed toy off the rim with his mouth while throwing down his second dunk.

"My first dunk was from the free throw line and it was good," Ibaka said. "The second one, nobody did it before in the NBA. ... [But] it's amazing to see Blake Griffin do a show like he did. He did a great job."

McGee brought out a second basket standard attached to a forklift, placing right next to the regular backboard. After several misses, he managed to throw down a left-handed dunk while tossing the other ball off the board to himself for a right-handed jam.

McGee joined Griffin in the second round by dunking three balls on the same leap, slapping home a pass for the third jam. DeRozan couldn't make the final round despite an impressive second dunk in which he threw a pass to himself off the backboard for a windmill reverse jam.
After Griffin's elbow dunk in the final, McGee floated underneath the rim and threw down an impossibly twisting jam from the other side.

That's when Griffin rolled out his wheels.

McGee made another difficult dunk in his final attempt, but Griffin received 68 percent of the fan voting that determines the final result.

Griffin chuckled when asked whether he'll defend his title next year in Orlando.

"We'll see. I have to come up with something else," he said. "Maybe a boat next year."

Earlier, the Heat finally beat the Celtics at something this season, thanks to Jones' smooth shooting stroke.

Jones, an eight-year veteran who rarely shoots inside the 3-point line, made five straight shots late in the final round with his ground-bound style. Pierce was the defending champion, and Allen recently became the NBA's career leader in 3-pointers.

"Those guys were cheering for me, rooting for me," said Jones, whose new-look Heat have lost three straight this season to the Celtics. "We know we've had our struggles against the Celtics in the past, but today the Heat came out on top, so I'm excited about that."

Donaire TKOs Montiel, bags bantamweight crowns

Posted by chardyboy on Sunday, February 20, 2011 0 comments

source: abs-cbnNEWS.com

MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) – Filipino bantamweight boxer Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire proved himself relentless after dethroning Mexican opponent Ferdinand Montiel in their headliner fight at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada, Saturday night (Sunday morning in Manila).

In a quick match, Donaire stopped Montiel via a technical knockout (KO) in the second round.

In the first round, Montiel showed that he has experience and skills in the division by consistently evading Donaire's attacks.

Donaire kept being aggressive but his punches failed to land on Montiel.

In the second round, Donaire then played it down by accepting Montiel's attacks. The Filipino played with his improved defense and evaded the countering Montiel.

A minute before the round concluded, an energetic Donaire then powered a left hook to Montiel's face knocking him down to victory.

With the win, the 28-year-old bagged the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Organization bantamweight crowns.

Donaire now ups his record to 26-1 with 18 KOs.

Montiel, on the other hand, falls at 44-3-2.

Montiel cannot make the post-fight press conference as he was sent to the hospital.

According to a tweet by Top Rank promotions, Montiel "was sent to the hospital to be checked due to the way he was knocked out."

Expected triumph?

After the match, Donaire said he had already been aiming to finish the fight early as soon as he knew that his fight against the Mexican would push through.

"When I found out I would fight Montiel, I said '2nd Round' and I used that to motivate me to not be afraid," he said in a Top Rank interview.

The "Filipino Flash" said he has indeed given his all in the match

"I put everything in that punch... surprised he got up. That was my hardest punch. My best punch in my career," he said of Montiel, his "most complete" foe to date.

Donaire has also stunned the boxing world with another quick match against Wladimir Sidorenko last November. The Filipino stopped the Ukranian via a 4th round knockout.

'Stunning'

According to ABS-CBN News North America correspondent Bev Llorente, boxing experts and fans at the Mandalay arena were stunned to witness such quick fight.

"Hindi nila inaasahan kasi world champion itong si Montiel. Nasa kanya pa iyong dalawang crowns," she said on ANC's Dateline Philippines.

"They were expecting na umabot man lang ng 6 rounds or 10 rounds. But it seems that hindi kinaya ni Montiel ang lakas ni Nonito," she added.

Meanwhile, boxing analyst Dennis Principe, said that he himself was shocked with how quick the fight ended.

"Actually I was expecting Nonito to knock (Montiel) out, but I was expecting a tough fight," he said in a live interview on Dateline Philippines.

Principe said that with the victory, Donaire has levelled up in the sport.

"Donaire just proved that he's the next best thing to come out of the Philippines after Manny Pacquiao, and a star is born," he said.

Donaire kept the Philippine flag waving along with compatriot "Mighty" Mark Jason Melligen, who defeated Mexican Gabriel Martinez.

Melligen won over Martinez by a unanimous decision in their welterweight bout in an undercard match. – With a report from Barry Viloria, abs-cbnNEWS.com, and Bev Llorente, ABS-CBN News North America correspondent

Underdog Boxing: Pumped up for the Pacquiao-Mosley undercard fights

Posted by chardyboy on Monday, February 14, 2011 0 comments

source: By CARLO L. PAMINTUAN (GMANews.TV)

For Pacquiao Sunday, my cousins and I usually pool money together to purchase the pay-per-view and we’d take turns hosting Pacquiao Sunday. When it’s my turn to host Pacquiao Sunday, I’d turn on the TV really early to watch the Filipino fighters on the undercard. After they’re done, I jump between watching the other undercards and NBA basketball.

I love boxing and basketball but if you made me choose between watching a compelling boxing match and a game between, say, the Miami Heat and the LA Lakers, I’d choose the boxing match. No doubt about it.

The fact that I jump from Pacquiao’s undercard and NBA basketball says a lot. It means that I really don’t find the fights all that interesting. Look, I’m a big fan of boxing. I’d watch it whenever I can but it’s just different when Pacquiao fights. AS we all know, Pacman fights twice a year; I spend the other 363 days of the year thinking and re-thinking everything there is to think about regarding Pacquiao. Adrenalin is flowing through my veins and I’m super amped on the day of the fight but then I’d have to watch Julio Caesar Chavez Jr. beat up another tomato can or see or a fighter like Alfonso Gomez, who was never that good to begin with, beat up an extremely faded Jose Luis Castillo.

To put things into perspective, the best undercard match on Pacquiao’s past five fights was the one between Mike Jones and Jesus Soto Karass. It wasn’t that good; the others were just really bad.

Again, don’t get me wrong. I’d gladly watch any boxing match on a quiet Tuesday evening but not on Pacquiao Sunday. Not when I’m basically high on Pacman fever.

However, it seems that we are nearing the light in the proverbial tunnel. Bob Arum is planning a packed undercard for Pacquiao’s fight against Mosley.

Arum didn’t do this for the past Pacquiao fights for one simple reason. He didn’t have to.

But now, Arum has a different agenda. Because he plucked Pacquiao from HBO to Showtime, Arum is hell-bent on selling more Pacquiao PPVs than ever before to prove that HBO needs him more than he needs them.

His first order of business is landing the rematch of last year’s Fight of the Year candidate. Arum wants Humberto Soto to defend his title against Urbano Antillon.

Next is a Puerto Rico versus Mexico match-up featuring WBO super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. against Jorge Arce. We all know that Arce is worth the price of admission.

Those are two world title fights on a Pacquiao undercard which, as far as I can remember, has never happened before.

Arum is also holding a slot open for the return of Kelly Pavlik. The former middleweight champion had a battle with alcoholism but is now back in training for another shot at boxing glory.

If Arum gets all these three fights, the writers who called for a boycott of the Pacquiao-Mosley fight may end up buying the pay-per-view themselves.

About Underdog Boxing

As the legendary Joe Frazier said, “boxing is the only sport you can get your brain shook, your money took, and your name in the undertaker book" yet a few brave men choose to fight for a living. Fighting, in their minds, is the best way to live a better life.

From the moment they throw their first punch, Filipino boxers are already heavy underdogs. They have to make do with rice sacks filled with sand for a punching bags and shirts wrapped around their hands for gloves. They fight for meager pay and, after they fight, they’d have to run back to their jobs in the construction site because they need to feed their families.

This column is for underdogs, boxing and beyond, who work every day to win even if the world tells them that they can’t.

Montiel 'most complete' foe, Donaire says

source: abs-cbnNEWS.com

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino boxing superstar Nonito Donaire Jr. has admitted that Mexican foe Fernando Montiel could be the most exciting fighter he has encountered in his career.

“I think Montiel is the most complete fighter I will have faced," Donaire said in BoxingScene.com.

The "Filipino Flash" added that Montiel studies both his abilities and his opponents before going inside the ring.

"He’s the smartest guy I have ever faced. I have faced tougher guys than that. As far as the smartest, I would say he is the most strategic overall fighter," he said.

Donaire will battle Montiel at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada on February 19 (February 20 in Manila).

He will attempt to seize the Mexican's World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight crowns.

Being "the biggest fight of (his) career," Donaire said he will be on his toes.

“This is going to be more a strategic fight... It’s going to be a long fight. One mistake from me or one mistake from him, and it’s going to be over," he said.

"I know he is up there and capable of anything. I am training as hard as I can to see how I can take advantage of Montiel. He has a lot to offer in this fight," the California resident added.

Donaire boasts of a 25-1 record and 17 of his bouts won via knockout (KO).

He last toppled Ukranian Wladimir Sidorenko to pave the way for the Montiel fight.

Donaire recently said he wants to move away from Manny Pacquiao's shadow by vowing to become the first Asian undisputed champion.

Donaire can keep up

Montiel, meanwhile, lauded Donaire and called him a "good fighter."

He said he is thrilled to face someone who matches up well to his boxing techniques.

"I think our styles match real well and it’s going to be a good fight," Montiel, who earlier considered Donaire's speed and power as threats, said.

However, Montiel said that he will also be on guard, in contrast to how the Filipino's most recent "victim," Sidorenko, fared in their match.

“[Donaire] looked really great against Sidorenko, but I’m not Sidorenko... Sidorenko just stood there in front of him, and I think you have to take that into consideration, too. I'm not going to be standing in front of him. I’m going to be moving around and I’ll be doing my job, too," he said.

Montiel added he and Donaire will try to make their match exciting.

“I want people to go in there and say that is a fight that they will remember for a long time. If we need to break into a war, let’s do a war, if that’s what needs to be done. But it is certainly not going to be a boring fight," he said.

Montiel has been undefeated since knocking out another Filipino, Ciso Morales, in February last year.

He has a 44-2-2 record, with 34 of his bouts won via KO.

La Salle outlasts UST in UAAP women's volleyball

La Salle bucked a University of Santo Tomas second-set comeback to eke out a 25-20, 25-27, 18-25, 25-22, 15-12 win Sunday in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the packed The Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Archers relied on Cha Cruz and Stephanie Mercado to take the final two sets, allowing the Taft-based spikers to improve to a 13-1 record on their way to the Final Four.

Cruz had 17 points while Mercado added 15 markers as La Salle kept its poise against the resilient Tigresses, who fought back from a 12-19 deficit in the second to win the set in a tiebreak.

That energized UST as it also took the third set, 25-18, and looked headed for the win.

But Cruz and Mercado took over the final two sets in the no-bearing game that was an entertaining rematch of last season’s championship series.

La Salle broke free from a 10-10 deadlock, with Stephanie Mercado scoring twice and Michelle Gumabao finishing the game with a kill.
Aiza Maizo had 20 points while Judy Caballejo contributed 17 markers for UST, which slipped to 10-4. But the Tigresses still hold a twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four over Adamson on Wednesday.

In the second game, Adamson solidified its hold on third spot, defeating Ateneo, 25-14, 25-21, 25-16.

Angela Benting finished with 19 points while Ma. Paulina Soriano added 12 points as the Lady Falcons took their ninth victory in 14 games.

“I’m happy that Angela and Pau brought their A-grade games," Adamson coach Dulce Pante said.
The Lady Eagles, who dropped to 8-6, will face La Salle in the semifinal round with the Lady Archers carrying a twice-to-beat advantage.

Azkals get $20,000 to train for Game 2

source: By Olmin Leyba (The Philippine Star)

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) will receive $20,000 in assistance from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) for the Azkals’ away game in Mongolia but that won’t be enough to cover the training camp planned in Ulan Bator one week before the March 15 AFC Challenge Cup qualifying match.

PFF president Mariano Araneta said transport alone would cost the 30-man Azkals delegation some $45,000 and this does not include the hotel and other needs yet. Team manager Dan Palami estimated the weeklong stint in Mongolia to be around P4 million.

“The plane fare to Mongolia alone is I think $1,500 per person. So kung 30 (people) ang pupunta, that’s already $45,000, so we really need more than $20,000,” said Araneta.

The PFF plans to send the Azkals to Mongolia early so as to get them used to the chilly conditions of Ulan Bator. Temperature for the game set at 1 p.m. is expected to be at -10 degrees.

“The hosts will only shoulder our stay for three days, so if we’re going to train three to four days more, we also have to pay for our hotel and food,” he said.

The $20,000 represents the assistance given by the AFC to visiting teams. Mongolia also received this amount when the Blue Wolves went to Bacolod City for the first leg last Wednesday.

Araneta said they will seek assistance from the Philippine Sports Commission and Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp., among others, to augment the PFF’s warchest for this trip.

And so as not to incur additional expenditure, Palami said “as soon as the game’s finished, we fly out (of Mongolia) immediately at 12 midnight.”

The Azkals drubbed the Blue Wolves, 2-0, in the first leg in Bacolod and the Mongolians need to beat the Pinoys by three goals on their turf next month to salvage the tie and advance to the group stages.

Arum looking at next fight for Manny

Posted by chardyboy on Monday, February 14, 2011 0 comments

source: By Abac Cordero (The Philippine Star)

LAS VEGAS – Bob Arum isn’t taking Shane Mosley lightly. Certainly not.

But at the MGM Grand Saturday, the legendary promoter told some members of the media he has already marked November for Manny Pacquiao’s next fight.

The venue, he said, will depend on who the opponent is. He mentioned only three names – Floyd Mayweather, of course, Juan Manuel Marquez, could be, and Andre Berto, perhaps.

“Floyd is still our number one priority,” said Arum, referring to the undefeated American, who’s in the news these days more for his misdeeds at home or out on the road.

“We want to find out if he’s available or what his legal status is. Right now I have no idea,” said Arum of the fighter who’s facing charges from assault, larceny to felony.

Arum and Mayweather were at last week’s Super Bowl in Denver, and even had their picture taken together. But the ageless chief of Top Rank said they never discussed boxing.

“If it’s Floyd, then certainly it’s Vegas,” he said.

“But if it’s Marquez, we might go somewhere else,” Arum added.

Somewhere else could mean Abu Dhabi, which has an old bid going, or Singapore or even Tokyo. Arum said they will weigh all the offers from these venues when the right time comes.

“We’ll see,” Arum said.

But whoever it is, and regardless of the venue, Arum said Pacquiao’s next fight will be at 147 lb, and that’s assuming, of course, that the Filipino icon gets past Mosley on May 7.

Because if he doesn’t, then there’s the possibility of a rematch.

“From now on Manny is going to fight at 147. He is the welterweight champion and he will defend that title.

Anybody who wants to fight Manny should fight him at 147,” Arum said.

“Nothing less,” he added.

Moment of Magic Decides Manchester Derby

Posted by chardyboy on Monday, February 14, 2011 0 comments

source: By ROB HUGHES (nytimes.com)

LONDON — No matter how or where we view the sport, soccer is the world’s game because of the way it can thrill every man, woman and child, wherever they see it.

Goals, without a doubt, are the purpose of it all.

On Saturday, it took a truly extraordinary goal from Wayne Rooney to win the 157th Manchester derby for United against City.
And it took a wonderfully constructed, exquisitely finished goal by David Silva to prevent Barcelona from losing at Sporting Gijón.
United’s 2-1 victory could quite easily be the pivotal result of its attempt to hold onto the English Premier League title. The 1-1 draw in Gijón ended Barça’s unprecedented run of 16 successive league victories, but is unlikely to harm its prospects or damage its morale.
But, unashamedly, we should narrow this down to those precious moments when goal scorers did what most people only ever do in their dreams.
First, Mr. Rooney.
By his own admission, the highest paid player in English soccer was not having a memorable derby on Saturday. Indeed, he has not been at the top of his form for a whole year, and at the time when City and United drew the first Manchester derby of the season, 0-0, last November, Rooney was at a sports clinic in the United States.
His agent had just held Manchester United ransom during contract negotiations. Rooney himself was out of condition, and he uttered the terrible statement that he considered himself superior to the rest of the players on United’s payroll.
He won the salary squabble, but lost respect, lost the sense of awe in which even children looked up to him.
One goal will not regain all of that. But, my, how we envy his ability to perform it.
The game on Saturday was moving toward its last 10 minutes. The score was even, and City had the momentum.
Then, it happened. Nani, the scorer of a fine first goal and the most accomplished United player on the field, crossed the ball from the right, but it took a deflection off a defender.
That deflection, in a way, made for the greatness of Rooney’s goal. He was positioned between two City players, but already airborne in anticipation of the cross. In midair, in a split second, he somehow contorted his bulky, bull-like body.
He had his back to the goal, and he was almost horizontal to the ground, three feet — a meter — or so above it. His legs were splayed, his left arm down to break the fall, his eyes watching the ball onto his right foot.
Or close to the foot. The ball actually made contact with the shin, but all the rest was near enough perfect. The timing, the direction, and the force with which he propelled that ball over his shoulder into the top corner of the net was, as Rooney himself was to say, the goal of his lifetime — thus far.
Rooney appeared afterwards to be unaware of any deviation in the path of the cross. He praised Nani’s perfect delivery. “I saw the ball coming from Nani and thought, ‘Why not try it?”’ he said.
Why not, indeed. Instinct, agility, acrobatics — unforgettable motion, and a game winner.
Alex Ferguson, United’s veteran coach, was still in thrall of that goal an hour later. Sir Alex, once a striker himself, has managed United through 1,370 games. He has seen his team score 2,499 goals and swears none at Old Trafford was as spectacular as this one.
Reminiscent, someone suggested, of Denis Law? “Yes — exactly, you’ve got something there,” Ferguson responded. “But whether Denis ever put them in with such ferocity, I’m not so sure.” In bars, cafes and living rooms, there will be comparisons made.
There can, though, be no argument that goals win games. On Saturday, City had left its new striker, Edin Dzeko, on the bench for an hour. United, trying to match up to City’s packed midfield, did the same with its leading scorer, Dimitar Berbatov.
City, more practiced and more comfortable with the plan, controlled more of the game. However, David Silva, its clever Spaniard, missed a chance from three meters before United broke the length of Old Trafford.
The goalie Edwin van der Sar launched a kick over the halfway line. Rooney and Julian Lescott jumped for it and missed, and the ball fell to Ryan Giggs.
His instant pass freed up Nani, whose first touch was pure and whose finish with the other foot was a model of composure.
City equalized when Dzeko’s shot hit the back of Silva, the deflection this time wrong-footing everybody.
Then, as City’s master defender, Vincent Kompany, was to lament, what can anyone do about genius? “I came into the dressing room with a smile on my face,” Kompany said, “because for 90 minutes, I gave him nothing. Then he does that!” A lasting impression was Yaya Touré of City embracing Rooney at the end.
It was the embrace of sportsmanship, the gesture that said if you are going to beat me, make it memorable.
Less demonstrably, David Villa returned as a Barcelona forward to Sporting Gijón, the club that made him. The son of a local miner, Villa became Spain’s leading scorer.
The labor was long and hard on Saturday after Sporting struck first at El Molinón. Its goal was opportunist when David Barral took advantage of defensive uncertainty between Gerard Piqué and Gabriel Milito.
Sporting’s organized resistance to Barcelona’s incessant waves of attack held out until the final 10 minutes. Then Lionel Messi won the ball, foxed three opponents and passed. Villa looked up, saw the goalie rushing toward him, and chipped delicately, precisely over him.
No celebration from Villa. Why would a man milk the moment he bites the hand of those who taught him? “We gave our lives for this draw,” said Sporting’s coach, Manuel Preciado.
“Although it seems to me that against the best team in the world it should be worth more than a point.” The best team in the world, the best goal in a lifetime. Quite some Saturday.

Mosley says he can KO with 1 punch

Posted by chardyboy on Sunday, February 13, 2011 1 comments

source: By Abac Cordero (The Philippine Star)

LAS VEGAS – Shane Mosley said Friday that the difference between him and fighters like Antonio Margarito or MiguelCotto is that he can take a guy out with one punch.

Like the way he almost did to Floyd Mayweather last May when he caught his undefeated fellow American with a big right in the second round, and almost knocked him down.

Mosley, however, failed to keep the pressure on, dropping a unanimous decision.

He hopes to land the same big punch against Manny Pacquiao on May 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and he’s hoping as well that he can shock the world with a knockout win.

“It doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m going for it (knockout),” Mosley told a couple of Filipino scribes at the Beverly Hills Hotel Friday, during a break with his photo shoot with Pacquiao.

The other day, Mosley told the media that he could end the fight quickly.

“I’m just stating that because of the type of punching power that I have. It’s not the power like Margarito or Cotto that needs to build up steam and then pretty soon knock the guys out,” said the 39-year-old native of California.
“I can hit the guy once and he can go to the ground. That’s what I meant by that,” he said.

But it’s so much easier said than done, especially when you’re up against Pacquiao, the reigning pound-for-pound champion who had gone undefeated in 13 fights over the last five years.

“I know Pacquiao is a great fighter. He’s a warrior inside the ring, and it can go either way. But I really have the punching power that can end it quick,” he said.

Mosley will train for two months at the Big Bear Camp, starting on March 7, which is exactly two months before the fight.

He said it’s been at Big Bear, where he’d trained for all his fights since 1995, and where he bought a home 10 years ago, and transformed it into the boxing gym.

“I’ll have two months,” he said.

“I think that will be great. I’m doing good. I usually do eight weeks because I’m always in pretty good shape. I’m not the type of fighter that gets bloated and needs an extra week to lose weight.

“I’m at exactly 160 now. I don’t worry about my weight. I’m a happy person. I’m an active person. I work out and play basketball and snowboard,” he said, in his boxing gear, like he’s ready to fight.
