MANILA, Philippines – Mixed martial arts (MMA) superstar Georges St.-Pierre congratulated boxing congressman Manny Pacquiao for winning the 2011 ESPY Best Fighter Award.
“Had a great time at the @ESPYs awards & party! Congrats to Manny for winning Fighter of the Year [award],” said St.-Pierre through his Twitter account.
St.-Pierre, one of the most popular champions in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), was among the candidates for the ESPY (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly) award.
Pacquiao beat St.-Pierre, Bernard Hopkins, Sergio Martinez, and Roy Jones for the honor.
St.-Pierre, who is coached by Pacquiao’s boxing trainer Freddie Roach, also expressed gratitude for his supporters who nominated him for the award.
“Thanks to everyone who voted for me,” he said.
St.-Pierre visited Manila last year and even trained with Pacquiao, who was then preparing for his super welterweight fight against Antonio Margarito.
