Top Rank director Brad Jacobs said that he expects the third encounter between world boxing icon Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez come November would surpass the previous all time record of $ 1.4 million earnings of Pacquiao-starred pay-per-view fights.
In yesterday’s Philippine Sportswriters Forum in Manila, Jacobs said “all the ingredients of a great fight like 38-year-old Marquez's age, his having had lesser fights, his determination to prove that he has won their two previous meetings, comparison of their skills and talent, speed and fanfare are present in what you might call their penultimate meeting to attract greater number of viewers."
He added that in boxing, a boxer might be 40 years old but still durable, while a young man of 25 would be finished at an early age simply because he does not know how to take care of himself and does not have the talent to box.
Jacobs added that having the greatest boxer in the world in a roadshow is a surefire formula since Pacquiao has all the qualities that endear him to the public--charm and technical know-how to boot.
He refused to say if the battle would go all the way because of intangible things and even luck that might affect the ring protagonists.
"I won't say if there's going to be a knockout but for sure, the audience would go home excited and satisfied with the result," he said.
Saying he favors hype and high-geared promotion for the international press tour and the match as well, Jacobs said coach Freddie Roach will join Pacquiao in a four-city global press starting September 6 in New York.
Marquez and Bob Arum of Top Rank Promotions are expected to arrive on Thursday in the company of Zander Promotions president Fernando Beltran and Mexican Hall of Fame trainer Nacho Beristain. They will be billeted at the Manila Hotel.*PNA
